Many small business owners and freelancers check their Google ranking the same way: open a browser, type their main keyword, and count pages until they find their site, or give up along the way. As intuitive as this method feels, it rarely gives an accurate picture of reality. Understanding why helps stop wasting time and start tracking rankings with genuinely reliable tools.
Why a manual search distorts the result
Google heavily personalizes its results. The position shown depends on the browser's search history, the signed in Google account, the device's precise location, and even the type of device used. Two people typing the exact same keyword at the same time, a few streets apart, can get different rankings. A manual search therefore does not measure one single position, but one variant among thousands of individualized results.
Results degrade after a few pages
Past roughly fifteen pages of results, Google stops returning pages that are genuinely relevant to the query and artificially fills the list with content further from the topic. Continuing to click next hoping to spot your site on page 20 or 30 gives no useful information: the absence of a relevant result at that stage says nothing about the site's actual ranking, or its indexing status.
The reliable source: Google Search Console
Unlike a manual search, Search Console relies on real impression and click data collected by Google for your site, without any personalization bias. Under the Performance tab, then Queries, you can filter by a specific keyword and get its real average position over the chosen period, along with associated impressions and clicks. It is a free tool, already available to any small business that has verified ownership of its site.
What the average position does not show
The average position remains an average, calculated across all query variants and devices combined. A site might show an average position of 8 while actually swinging between 3rd and 15th place depending on the day or the exact wording typed by users. It is therefore useful to cross reference this figure with its trend over time rather than trusting a single number, and to check mobile and desktop results separately, since they can differ noticeably.
Check indexing before worrying about ranking
Before worrying about a poor ranking, make sure the target page is actually indexed. The URL Inspection tool in Search Console shows whether a page is indexed, whether it is considered canonical, and when it was last crawled. A keyword missing from performance reports may simply mean the corresponding page is not developed enough yet or never generated an impression, which is a different situation from a poor ranking.
Third party tools, useful at larger scale
Rank tracking tools such as Ahrefs, SEMrush or Ubersuggest query Google from neutral servers and give a position free of personalization bias, with daily history. They are especially useful for tracking dozens of keywords continuously and comparing against specific competitors, but they carry a monthly cost that is often disproportionate for a small business that simply wants to track a handful of local queries. For that use case, Search Console is more than enough.
Automating tracking with the API
For freelancers comfortable with development, the Search Console API can automatically extract average positions for several keywords over a given period, without going through the interface at all. A small scheduled script can generate a weekly or monthly report, far more reliable and faster than a series of manual searches.
Tracking your rankings therefore requires a change of habit: replacing manual searches with regular reading of real Search Console data, keeping in mind that a good ranking on a generic, competitive query often takes several months to build, especially against already established local competitors.
Points to verify before publishing: confirm that the described Search Console features (query filtering, average position, URL inspection) still match the current interface at publication time, and check that the third party tools mentioned remain relevant and up to date in their offering.
