Your website presents your services and publishes articles, but visitors have to return to the menu to move between them. A tradesperson in Nice might explain how to maintain an air conditioning system without directing readers to their maintenance service. The content answers a question; the journey ends there.
Internal linking means connecting pages within the same website. In 2026, improving these journeys remains a practical step for a small business adding content without redesigning its entire navigation.
Connect pages according to visitors’ needs
A link should offer a logical next step. After reading an article about choosing a material, someone may want to view a completed project, understand the relevant service or request a quote. Choose the destination that answers their next question.
In its documentation on ecommerce site structure, Google explains that links help it understand relationships between pages. For your business, start by mapping the intended journeys: which page should lead to which other page, and why?
Identify important pages that are difficult to reach
List your priority services, then work out how visitors can reach them from the homepage and related content. A recent service page may have existed for months without being linked from older pages that could introduce it.
A page with no incoming internal links is called an orphan page. To find one, compare your page inventory with the pages discovered by a crawling tool that follows links. Check its settings: a tool that ignores some JavaScript links may produce an incomplete assessment. Start with pages that serve a specific business objective.
Choose link labels that explain the destination
Google’s SEO Starter Guide recommends link text that describes the target page. Prefer “air conditioning maintenance in Nice” to “click here” when the destination genuinely covers that service and area.
Avoid putting a city name in every link, however. An article aimed at all your customers does not need a string of location-based phrases. Read the sentence aloud: the link should fit naturally into the text without turning the paragraph into a list of keywords.
Check how the link is actually built
The MDN HTML documentation describes a hyperlink as an a element with an href attribute containing its destination. Ask your web provider to check the clickable blocks in your theme, particularly service cards.
Google recommends this format for crawling, including when generated by JavaScript, and specifies no ideal number of links. A visual effect or a clickable card therefore does not establish the quality of your internal linking.
Improve existing content systematically
Before installing a plugin that adds links automatically, carry out a focused review. On a small WordPress website, this initial pass can be completed in the editor:
- Choose a service you want to make easier to find.
- Identify articles and completed projects that genuinely address that need.
- Add a link where the service offers a useful answer.
- Open the destination to check that its content matches the link and test the journey on mobile.
- Record the updated pages and the date in your editorial tracker.
A bathroom renovation business in Cannes could, for example, link an article about shower installation constraints to a detailed project case study. This illustrates a visitor journey; it does not mean every page needs a reciprocal link.
Assess results without promising automatic gains
First, check usability: is the service easier to find? Does the visitor reach the right form? Then review changes in enquiries received and, if you have a suitable measurement method, clicks through to the page.
Compare similar periods and record other changes, such as an advertising campaign. An increase after an update does not, on its own, prove that the links caused it.
Points to check before publication
Review the cited recommendations on crawlable links and the absence of an ideal link count; confirm the limitations of the tool used to identify orphan pages; check that service examples remain hypothetical and that no improvement in rankings or enquiries is guaranteed.
